Kanwaljeet is a highly popular actor of Indian films and TV serials. An FTII alumni, he started his career in films and was a part of acclaimed films like Satte Pe Satta and Marhi Da Deeva. He soon branched into TV serials and won critical acclaim and fame and recognition for his work in serials like Buniyaad and Farmaan. He has been one of the most recognised faces and one of the earliest stars of Indian TV with serials like Andaaz, Daraar, Saans etc. However, he has continued working in films also and has worked with renowned directors like Gulzar in Maachis and Aparna Sen in 15, Park Avenue.
Kanwaljeet portrays the character of Ranvir Singh Grewal in Virsa. Ranvir Singh Grewal, 45, is a successful restaurant owner in Sydney. He was a simple village boy from Punjab, who came to Australia about 20 years ago and made it big. His success turned his head and he started looking down on his culture and traditions, his people and their values. He felt that he was superior to the other Indians and was more like the white folks around him. He turned his back to Indian values and traditions, beliefs and customs and adopted the Western lifestyle with a vengeance. He started believing that making money is all that matters and ethics and morality have no relevance in today’s world.
Ranvir Singh’s character reflects the mindset of many Asians, who are taken in by the gloss and glamour of the Western society and start looking down upon their own culture and their people. Through Ranvir Singh’s character, Virsa makes a statement that while it is perfectly alright and even desirable to adapt to the new society and adopt its best practices, one should not go overboard. We should not forget our roots and our values, which can guide us in differentiating right from wrong. We must also guard against the undesirable aspects of the new culture.
This is the first time that Kanwaljeet is taking on a role with grey shades.
