Gulshan Grover needs no introduction. Starting out in 1980, with Hum Paanch, Gulshan Grover has, over the years, made a name for himself with a repertoire of over 250 films. Although initially, he was acknowledged as the ‘Bad Man’ par excellence, he has proved his versatility by taking on characters with positive shades and performing them convincingly. He has worked in many Hollywood films also, one of the few Indian actors to have managed a decent presence in both the film industries.
In Virsa, Gulshan Grover portrays the character of Sardar Jogindar Singh, Ranvir Singh’s father, a 70 years old man from a village, Kartarpur, in Punjab. He is a simple, honest, hard working man with a great bonding with his culture and traditions. He has lived all his life in Punjab and wants to spend his last days here too. He is not interested in going to Australia but Ranvir cons him and takes him to Sydney to live with his family. However, even in Australia, Sardarji pines for the smells, sounds and sights of his beloved Punjab. His soul belongs to his homeland and he can never be happy anywhere else.
Sardar Joginder Singh is one of the main characters of Virsa. He represents the Punjabi way of life, the culture and traditions of Punjab which are still being followed by the older generation today. His character makes the point that while adapting to the new circumstances and lifestyle, there is much from the older way of life, that still needs to be preserved, which will provide a strong moral grounding in the changing world of today.
